The original Gucci Bamboo bag was first created in 1947 and is a small handbag crafted in pigskin with a curved bamboo handle. Throughout the 1950’s and 60’s, the Gucci Bamboo bag was worn by countless international celebrities, establishing it as one of Gucci’s most beloved and successful handbags.
The New Bamboo is comprised of 140 separate pieces, which are handcrafted by an artisan in Gucci’s Florentine workshops. It is assembled in the same manner as the original, and it requires 13 hours of work to complete the smallest of details. Recently, in association with IFM, a design institute in France, Gucci and Ever Manifesto newspaper presented a simple sustainability challenge to design a high fashion, environmentally handbag, using the famous Gucci Bamboo bag as inspiration. The goal of the competition was to support and promote green initiatives in the fashion world.
