Bamboo toothbrushes – servicing hygienic & environmental needs

bamboo_toothbrushEvery time we visit a dentist, he or she will invariable tell us how essential it is to brush our teeth well. The dentist will also recommend replacing our toothbrushes regularly for a healthy dental care. Now consider this – assuming we replace our toothbrushes once in every three months and if we take into consideration that an average human’s life span is 70 years – one can discard close to 300 plastic toothbrushes in a lifetime. Most of these toothbrushes are made from a combination of plastic and rubber for the hand piece and the bristles are made of nylon – these items are biodegradable, therefore they remain in landfills for an extremely very long time without degrading.

The ordinary plastic toothbrush may be a small item of daily use – but what we have established above clearly indicates that it does have a powerful negative impact on mother earth. Of late we have seen the concept of bamboo toothbrushes slowly spreading. Green Gold Bamboo strongly feels it needs to pick momentum for a sustainable future. Small green living steps like replacing our plastic brushes with bamboo brushes will go a long way in nurturing a better tomorrow.

Bamboo is a renewable resource. Bamboo is a family of grass and not a tree. It matures quickly in as little as three to five years, much faster than hardwood trees which can take upwards of twenty years or more to reach maturity. Some species of bamboo grow more than three feet each day. Bamboo sends out new shoots after each harvest and hence there is no need for additional planting or cultivation.

The most beneficial aspect of Bamboo is that it decomposes naturally, so disposing of a bamboo toothbrush is very easy, and it does have a negative impact on mother Earth. Moreover, the bamboo used for making the handles is organic and sustainably grown with natural, antimicrobial properties. Bamboo brushes look elegant and fashionable as well. Bamboo toothbrushes will not only clean your teeth, but it will also build a sustainable tomorrow. Sustainability, industrial ecology, eco-efficiency, and green living have to be the guiding principles of development of the next generation of consumer products.
